Last month, WHA was honored to take part in groundbreaking ceremonies for two prominent urban, transit-oriented projects. Las Ventanas Family Apartments in downtown Long Beach broke ground on June 6 and The Orchard at Downtown Azusa on June 13. Both projects exemplify WHA’s commitment to designing buildings that benefit residents and enhance communities.

Las Ventanas Family Apartments is a 102-unit, affordable housing, mixed-use podium building that features retail spaces on the ground floor. WHA is proud to be part of a project local to our LA office in Long Beach. At the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Long Beach Boulevard, the project is adjacent to the Long Beach Blue Line, which will serve as a convenient mode of transportation for residents. Mayor Robert Garcia attended the groundbreaking and is excited to see affordable housing making its way into Long Beach. He has initiated the Everyone Home Long Beach Task Force, the goal of which is to get people off the streets and into housing. Managed out of WHA’s Los Angeles office by Bernard Ines, Las Ventanas is scheduled for completion in March of 2021 and will be part of the Everyone Home movement. Serrano Development Group hosted an early evening celebration on The Orchard’s site; a location that is currently a parking lot and soon to be transformed into a vibrant destination. City residents filled the lot, showing support for the mixed-use project which will be instrumental in the revitalization of the city’s downtown district, with its five-screen Laemmle Theatre and key retailers. Serrano Development gathered individuals who have been influential in bringing the project to reality, including all the City Council members. Mayor Joseph Rocha delivered a touching speech about the historic Azusa Edward’s Theater that served as inspiration for the The Orchard’s design. Representing WHA’s Los Angeles office were Jay Kocourek and Judy Vega, who managed the project’s technical design and will see the project through completion, also scheduled for March 2021.
