The One Where We Went to PCBC

After two years we finally returned to San Francisco for PCBC’s 2022 Summer Tradeshow! PCBC is the annual event for the California Building Industry Association (CBIA) and the Leading Builders of America (LBA) and attracts builders from across the U.S. and 25 other countries. Throughout the week we were able to reconnect with colleagues, learn the latest trends, and get inspired by all the incredible speakers.

To kick off the conference, WHA staff members attended the California Home Building Foundation Hall of Fame Gala where five industry leaders were inducted: Orange County’s own Lucy Dunn and Emile Haddad, along with Nancy Keenan, Linda Mandolini, and John Norman. Each honoree energized the room with their passionate speeches discussing their commitment to their careers and the industry. The California Homebuilding Foundation also presented scholarships to five students in California universities’ construction programs, and again, three of five were women.

PCBC’s  59th Annual Gold Nugget Awards were held on Wednesday, June 22. After a day full of learning, we headed into the well-anticipated award show with five WHA projects honored as Award of Merit Winners: Petaluma Historic House by Lafferty Communities, Lookout at Bay37 by PulteGroup, Coastline Ventura by JDA West, LLC, the Waiehu Master Plan by Genova Construction & Development, and Sommers Bend by Woodside Homes. We are thrilled to share the Waiehu Master Plan by Genova Construction & Development was named the Best On-the-Boards Site Plan! Located in Maui, HI, this site will provide multiple tiers of affordable housing with 752-units as part of the 201H approval process. Uniquely situated between town, country, mountain, and sea, take a moment to learn about the site’s unique attributes and future amenities by visiting its project page.

Inspirational keynotes by Concert Pianist Jade Simmons and Pixar Storyteller Matthew Luhn set the tone for imaginative and creative thinking.

On the final day of the conference, our very own Senior Principal, Ron Nestor, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP had the opportunity to host a panel, “No Home for Old Men (or Women).” Ron was joined by a senior housing expert, Helen Foster, Principal of Foster Strategy, and a developer of pioneering housing solutions, Ana Pinto da Silva, Founder & CEO of 2G3R. They explored the looming crisis in affordability in the senior housing market. Head over to page 56 of the June 2022 Builder & Developer Magazine to read an article by Ron discussing the premise of the presentation.

The final keynote presented Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community with DMB Development in Rancho Mirage which featured renderings by WHA! Learn what’s to come for this development by visiting the Disney Parks Blog.

All in all, it was such a pleasure to be able to return safely to PCBC this year. Being able to sit next to our colleagues for a week full of educational opportunities led by industry experts, is exactly what our team needed to kick off this summer. See you next year, PCBC!
