Enjoying the Little Things

There is no doubt about it, 2020 has been a year unlike any other. It has been undeniably trying for so many, and because of this, there is a lot of room for negativity when looking back on this unique year. However, it is my belief that if you take a note from Ferris Bueller and “stop and look around once in a while,” you’re likely to find a bright spot in more places than you might think.

As a self-proclaimed optimist, I find little things to enjoy everywhere. Whether it’s relishing the morning sun peeking through the marine layer haze on my way to work, or the perfect song coming on the radio as I drive home, there is always something that makes me smile during a seemingly mundane activity like commuting. I challenge us all to recognize and enjoy these little moments when they happen.

As a designer, I am constantly noticing intriguing details about buildings I pass by. I find it fun to critique other people’s work or use their efforts to inspire my future designs. There is always something that catches my attention, something that I have never seen before, and something that keeps me interested and enjoying the little things in our profession.

During this unusual holiday season, let’s all take some time to enjoy everything we still can to the fullest. Drive around and appreciate all the Christmas lights that many still took the time and effort to set up around their homes. Decorate a tree with your family even though you can’t have a large party to show it off. Enjoy laughing and reminiscing on phone or zoom calls with friends and loved ones you haven’t seen in a while, and maybe secretly enjoy the fact that you don’t have the added stress of having to entertain and house them for several days this year. Most importantly, look forward as we turn the page on 2020 for good and relish the possibility of a brighter future, filled with so many little things along the way.
