Life’s a Vacation at The Resort

The Resort, a new master planned community designed by WHA, in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, introduces an unexpected and fresh design to an urban infill site. The land was formerly a golf course, retired due to decreasing popularity of the sport and expensive upkeep. It is the first, large-scale, Inland Empire project to break away from traditional Spanish-Mediterranean styles and present contemporary architectural design to the area. This masterplan from Lewis Community Developers and WHA provides modern resort-style living and playing in a highly connected, intimate, and laid-back community.

The plan includes up to 3,450 apartments, multi-family, and single-family homes; a mix of offices, and retail shops; and two clubhouses at the core of The Resort. High-density residences are surrounded by intimate gathering spaces and a connective network of pedestrian pathways that generate dynamic, people-centric environments. To the north, The Resort will connect to “The Yard”, an intensive Transit Oriented Development (TOD) that is a private, public partnership with the city and Metrolink.

Visioning and theming guidelines orchestrated each detail of the community into a colorful mosaic of places to live, play, work, and relax. As its name denotes, The Resort channels a care-free, fun, and flexible lifestyle, accompanied by resort-style amenities, urban structures, and connected public spaces. Its own city within a city, The Resort promotes a lifestyle where every day is a vacation.

A unique feature to the plan is the fresh take on a community connector. The Resort Parkway serves as the organizing element of the community. This central street is an amenity itself, with buffered bike lanes, sixteen-foot-wide pedestrian zones on either side, and paseos, which laterally connect neighborhoods back to the central street. Connectivity was also achieved through bent-grid street systems, roundabouts and tapered streets for shorter, safer pedestrian crossings.

Residents have the ideal hangout at one of the recreational facilities, The Club on 6th. This centrally located clubhouse reflects the artistic qualities of the community incorporating art sculptures, bright colors, and contemporary architectural features. The facilities include a large pool, spacious outdoor barbeque area, multi-purpose rooms and kitchens, conference rooms and offices, a state-of-the-art gym, and a second-story clubroom that provides views of the resort-style environment and a sunset deck. This is the perfect getaway from everyday life where people can let their guard down and engage in human interaction.

In one of the neighborhoods, our architects designed Tempo by Tri Pointe Homes – the next generation of high density, single family detached residences. Showcasing urban and contemporary styles, Tempo has open, three-story floorplans with sizeable decks on the second level and semiprivate courtyards at the ground level with connectivity to indoor living spaces. Three elevation styles, multiple color schemes, and varying massing and details from plan to plan, seamlessly integrate with the modern aesthetic of the community.

The Resort is now open and embraced by the city of Rancho Cucamonga, with successful sales to date. The WHA designed Tempo neighborhood provides the largest residences with prices from the $500,000s. The Resort will be changing the next generation’s experience of new, high-density housing for years to come.
