Happy Father’s Day!

In honor of Father’s Day, my siblings and I would like to pay tribute not just to our dad, Bill Hezmalhalch, but to all working fathers. Whether you work with your children or not, your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed by your children. Here is our journey and what we have learned from working in a family business and observing our dad.

Growing up in the homebuilding industry gave us an intense appreciation for design and innovation. We often found ourselves commenting on the design of a home or building wherever we went and taking photographs of the homes we imagined ourselves living in. Our family vacations were spent exploring new cities, walking through neighborhoods, admiring and critiquing designs of homes and learning how good design impacts neighborhoods. Starting at a young age we’ve attended countless grand openings of communities, sat through industry award shows and walked many model homes. All of this exposure led us to one big conclusion: our expectations for our future homes are very high and we definitely want a custom one!

Being able to see our dad in a working environment has opened our eyes to a completely different side of him. We have seen firsthand the passion he has for his job, his craft and the people he works with every day. At home, we have always known him as our goofy dad who would randomly bust-out dance moves to make us laugh. But at work, it’s all business, with a few jokes thrown in here and there. People think it is hard to work with family, but it has strengthened our relationships and we are very thankful for the environment he has created.

Here are a few lessons our dad has taught us about life and business:

1) If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.

2) Design matters.

3) Always see the best in people.

4) Give back.

5) Put faith and family first (especially if they are grandchildren).

Thank you to all the hard working dads out there.

Happy Father’s Day!
